Q: Why are online contests and giveaways free? Don't they have to also earn a living? Or are they just too kind to host giveaways?

Giveaways and online contests serves as a form of advertisement online. Most prizes are from sponsors (Sigma cosmetics, Estee Lauder etc.) that has a product that they want to advertise to the public. Online giveaways is a form of advertising these new products or services.
Example: Salon XXX opened. For the salon to be known to the public it will hold a promo launch. The prize is a free treatment or gift certificate to Salon XXX.
Case 2
Well some bloggers say that they want to thank their readers for all the support so they're hosting self-hosted giveaways (means they don't have a sponsor product/brand for the prizes). This may be true. However, since the mechanics are following, and sharing the blog, the catch here is that the page traffic and rank of the blog increases as more followers are obtained through the online giveaways.
In this case the product or brand is not being promoted but rather the blog/site itself.
Q: Are there really winners? Aren't they just scam contest/giveaways that wants to sell my email to spammers?
A: Yes they are true. Although some do create scam contest/giveaways but they will never be posted in this blog (since I also been a victim of those scam contests and giveaways and yeah my mail has at least 2-3 spam emails per day :(
